Congratulations to Dr. Chelsey VanDrisse, the PI of the VanDrisse Lab and Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics, for winning this year’s UGA Freezer Challenge! Dr. VanDrisse’s Lab focuses its research on how bacteria generate biofilms in their natural environments. Dr. VanDrisse has demonstrated extraordinary efforts in sustainability, resulting in 58.8 kWh of energy saved per day through the implementation of several cold storage management practices. As the challenge winner, the VanDrisse Lab will receive a new high-efficiency ultra-low freezer valued at $15,000, courtesy of UGA Utility and Energy Management. Here’s what Dr. VanDrisse had to say about her involvement:
“Our lab joined the International Freezer Challenge as a fun way to cut back on energy use and rethink how we do science more sustainably. Since so much of our research depends on keeping samples cold, we loved the challenge of finding creative ways to save energy while protecting our experiments and the planet. It even sparked other sustainable ideas through Green Labs programs, like recycling pipette tips and boxes or using outlet timers to power down equipment at night. We are excited to continue to carry out sustainable research for years to come!”
The International Laboratory Freezer Challenge is a global competition designed to promote conservation through improved cold storage management practices. As research labs consume 5-10 times more energy per square foot than regular classrooms and offices, improving energy consumption in UGA laboratories not only promotes sustainable science but also saves the institution energy costs. This competition is an opportunity for researchers to learn about proper freezer maintenance to protect vital samples, reduce energy consumption costs, and prolong the life of lab equipment.
This year, 65 labs across UGA participated, representing 7 colleges and 25 academic departments. We want to recognize the following academic departments and colleges:
- Top 3 Colleges by Participation:
- Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
- College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences
- College of Veterinary Medicine
- Department with the Most Participants: Food Science & Technology
- Department with the Highest Combined Energy Savings: Department of Infectious Disease, with a daily energy savings of 88.15 kWh.
In total, participating UGA labs achieved a combined daily energy savings of 503 kWh. Annually, this amounts to a remarkable savings of 183,600 kWh, translating into $20,196 in financial savings.
Thank you to all the UGA labs who took part in the 2025 Freezer Challenge! Your commitment to sustainable research practices is making a lasting impact on both the environment and the future of scientific innovation at UGA.
